Beyond Physics: The Origin and Evolution of Life

Stuart Kauffman Seminar Video

I will discuss the origin of life up to the plausible emergence of protocells, based on Constraint Closure, collectively autocatalytic sets of polymers, the onset of a catalyzed connected metabolism and closure in reproducing liposomes. Such protoells, and life in general, evolve in such a way that we cannot say even what can arise. Hence no laws at all entail the evolution of the biosphere. Thus reductionism, in its grand sense of a dream of a final theory that entails all that becomes in the universe, fails.

All qBio sponsored talks take place on Wednesdays at 2:00 p.m. in the 3rd floor Orchard View room of the Discovery Building unless otherwise noted. Talks are open to the public. Access to the room is via the elevator behind Aldo’s Cafe in the Northeast corner of the building.
