The Wisconsin Idea is frequently celebrated as a highway that runs from the University to the residents of the Badger State to allow the “application of intelligence and reason to the problems of society.”  It was first enunciated by then President Charles Van Hise in 1904 who declared he would “never be content until the beneficent influence of the university reaches every family in the state.”

How will the Wisconsin Idea develop over the course of the 21st Century? Perhaps the intelligence and reason of every family in the state could serve as a beneficent influence to the university? Come explore some ways this new vision is playing out on campus, and how the public can be effectively engaged in a public university.

Crossroads of Ideas is a public lecture series held monthly on Tuesday evenings during the academic year that addresses challenging and engaging social science topics such as politics, policy issues, ethics, public perceptions, law and science and society.
